Northern Lights! Cameras! Action! Film Challenge #3

This fall, M’Guphynn Media has screened short films at two events for our first Northern Lights, Cameras, Action! Workshop, where we paid Alberta Filmmakers to screen their short films under 5min featuring film techniques taught during accompanied workshops. In addition, we awarded $100 for best film and $100 for Audience vote film for the filmmakers in attendance.

We just completed our FINAL educational workshop at SECPA (The Suncor Centre for the Performing Arts) to teach young local filmmakers the basics of MONTAGE. Students were taught how to write and shoot montages using camera movement, music, and transitions.

Now it’s YOUR turn AGAIN. M’Guphynn Media is happy to announce a Film Challenge open to ALL ALBERTA, CANADA RESIDENTS. Here are the details:

  • Make your own short film based on any genre but it must be under 5min and feature a MONTAGE.

  • You can film on something as simple as your cell phone but the films must be appropriate for a general audience. No nudity, profane language, or graphic content.

  • $50 Screening Fee will be paid to each film selected to screen. Regardless of attendance.

  • Additional Film Prizes will be awarded to audience choice films (bring your friends), and best film, chosen by a panel of Judge. Filmmakers must be in attendance to be eligible for prizes.

  • The screening takes place Saturday, December 18th. The event is free but the deadline to submit is DECEMBER 13th, 2021. Submit to info@mguphynn.com

Students were taught how to approach filming DIALOGUE in film, setting up shots for conversations, filming actions and reactions of performances, and the use of L and J cuts.

  • Make your own short film based on any genre but must be under 5min, feature a DIALOGUE scene with the use of L and J cuts. (see example here).

  • $50 Screening Fee will be paid to each film selected to screen. Regardless of attendance.

Early this month, M’Guphynn Media held an educational workshop at SECPA (The Suncor Centre for the Performing Arts) to teach young local filmmakers the basics of Scene Coverage.

Students were introduced to the concepts behind BLOCKING, LIGHTING, REHEARSING, and TWEAKING a scene before filming a scene. This was followed by WIDE, MEDIUM, and CLOSE UP / INSERT coverage as students were given hands-on experience filming their own version of a scene based on a M’Guphynn Media short.

 M’Guphynn Media Part-time Paid Stipend Internship

Role: Production Assistant, Fort McMurray, Alberta

Company Background 

M’Guphynn Media is comprised of a multi-disciplined team of producers from Northern Alberta who manage projects based on our respective skill sets. 

We have collaborated on genre short films ranging from Comic Book, to Horror, to Comedy and even Documentary since 2012.  

Our latest collaboration is with Arts Council Wood Buffalo on the 2021 Buffy Awards

The Role 

We are looking to mentor a Production Assistant who is available weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) to help us film the narrative story of the 2021 Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards with Arts Council Wood Buffalo.

The selected candidate will 

  • Be available Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) and a weekday or two in September, in particular September 17-19. Up to 6 days during filming period. 

  • Have a valid driver’s license and vehicle to transport themselves to filming locations. 

  • Assist with rehearsals and filming of scenes and inserts.  

  • Assist with the movement of camera equipment.  

  • Go on Coffee/Lunch runs as required. 

  • Have a knowledge of Google Docs/Microsoft Office for small administrative duties as required.

Stipend Payment 

The selected Candidate for the Production Assistant role will be paid in the form of an $950 Stipend. Production Assistant will be required for a total of six (6) days during the period of September 7th to September 26th on Saturdays/Sundays and occasional weekdays. Shifts will be up to eight (8) hours.
